No, I would not disparage Russian fishing equipment outright. Sure we have been blessed with capitalism for a long time and our stores overflow with excellent and varied products. BUT, some of the very best fishing equipment available on the planet comes from Russia and no where else. For example ice fishing jigs for small fish machined from pure tungsten and fitted with the best Japanese hooks. We don't have that here.
The spade end hooks shown below are common in Japan, Continental Europe, UK, Russia, etc. Maybe we are strange here for not using them.
