Like Bill says, when you open up the bolt face you can't go back...last winter Bill opened up a Pre'64 for me and rebarreled it to 308 Norma.
There are LOTS of options with a 30-06 bolt face and magazine.
Bill is doing another Pre'64 Model 70 to 280 Ackley for me and the next Pre'64 I find with a 270/30-06 bolt face and magazine that's not in really nice shape will become a 35 Whelen.
