i had something very similar happen to me a few weeks ago.
I caught a coyote far back on the neck and it was still alive when i drove up to the site. I had my 22-250 in the truck so I retrieved it a shot the coyote in the shoulder area from the truck. coyote fell over immediately and I grabbed my cable cutters to cut him free. when I walked up I found the snare laying on the ground beside him. turns out I shot the breakaway of the snare and the loop popped off the coyote before he fell over.
as you said, couldn't do that with a bench rest!
