My son will be choosing his career path in the next few years. He is currently interested in IT but is also very mechanically inclined, so looking at something involving both. I think he should consider apprenticing in automotive and once a journeyman work towards specializing in diagnostics. Similar to what these guys are doing:

Seems to me there is (and will continue to be, as vehicles become more complicated) a growing demand for someone who can correctly diagnose what is wrong with a vehicle, no?
