I think that 3 miles is a pretty good rule of thumb. That's about what I do but I'm a nomad and I start a new baitsite once I catch the locals and the site stops producing. Catch and move......catch and move......it seems to work better for me in the farmland that I'm trapping.
I did have one site this season that produced for two months until it finally ran dry though.
