For a rod you'll want some backbone. 36"mh at minimum. Guys do it with short flimsy rods but.....
20lb braid and a 6-10' 15-25lb flouro leader. Personally I direct tie everything....no snaps or swivels unless the lure dictates I need a snap.
If you're walking I'd suggest the marina....its the shortest easiest walk to deep water.... followed by French Bay.....but usually there's a decent trail to the common spots that any 4wd pickup or medium suv can navigate to.
