I have both the .204 and the .17 hornet.
Hornet is quieter and effective range is about 275yds with 25gr. Hornady bullets. The rifle will shoot farther but at 275yds. or less there are no walking wounded.
The .204 rocks, 350+yds. is a chip shot with 40gr. Hornady V-Max...BUT louder and the neighbors tend to complain a bit more.
If you have the room go .204 or if space is limited the .17 is a good choice...OR buy them both and have options...
