I agree with Berkley XL - the XL is "extra limp" meaning the line is specifically designed with lower memory than comparable line.

Mono is also easy to tie, has enough stretch for forgiveness and, like you said, cheap enough that break offs aren't a budget buster.

The other thing to consider - don't "overstretch" mono when spooling it onto a spinning reel. It should go on with some stretch (snug) but not so much to cause more problems.

I usually get one of the kids or my wife hold the spool with a pencil through the hub part and try and have them apply just enough pressure so the rod tip is just bent over a little so it goes on the spool nice and snug.
