I've heard of them. Took my kids fishing for them a few years ago with spinning rods, figured that kind of fly would guarantee some fish. It did. They are NO fun to get un-pinned, had to use a knife. Took almost 7-8 minutes. Good news is~gar have a primitive lung, and can breath air when there isn't enough oxygen in the water.

Here is a photo of my daughter with a gar caught on a rope fly. I use regular streamer flies (bunny leeches) and add a treble, trailer. They're notoriously short strikers, so you need something that hangs at the end, or just past the end of the fly if you want a chance at hooking one of these fish. They are abundant though.
