If you want another rifle go for it as you can ever have too many! But you want something better or different than your .30-06 then look beyond a .270.

You're right that there isn't a ton of difference, but I think he's looking for a little softer shooting alternative for his wife, and I have noticed a difference between 30-06 and .270.
