The lids are neat idea.

You probably already know this, but if you find you getting mostly flaring birds for the first shot, you may want to try opening the lids gradually and coming up slower to shoot.

The act of popping open lids quickly really draws attention to your position. Birds coming in on deck can really get out of Dodge quickly if the wind is strong,,, but if you can get the birds continue coming in as you "unconceal" yourself, you can get an easier first shot and better second and third shots too.

The old pop up goose chairs were really bad for creating flaring birds ,,, biggest reason we quit using them. Same principle applies for layouts too.
