Actually, I think there might be some truth in that. There's a type of base that does use that hole as a fastening point. You just have to replace the ejector screw with one that's longer to compensate for the thickness of the mount.

It might be the original method they used to attach a scope to a no4mk1(T) but I'm not sure.
