I agree with Findaway's post - I seem to catch more Pike and Walleye through the ice using a rattlin rap or some other fluttering or noisy lure. I only use bait for tip ups (where allowed to do so).
And .... yes .... the road into Winefred SUCKS. Need a good 4x4 and the ability to drive one with reasonable intelligence.
