I have to jump in. I myself have shot many doubles with an 870. When our club first got really going, most of the shooters were using a pump of some kind. Since that was what we were using, we got quite good cycling the guns. In the hands of a practiced shooter, a pump can be shot just as quick, if not quicker, than a semi. That being said, it does not mean that a double is for everyone.
I would recommend against buying any top end trap gun as a starter. They are a serious investment and are better suited to someone that has made a serious commitment to the sport.
Buying a less expensive gun and then spending the difference to buy shells and practice will do more to making a better shooter than simply buying a high end trap gun. IMHO.
