I just finished reading through this thread and I have to admit there is some interesting advise. I think Jiffy 10 nailed the technical advise but maybe all you need to do (which was mentioned a couple of times) is lift up on the auger to allow the blades to turn and slowly (under control) slowly allow the blades to bite until your thru. I own two augers both are jiffy's. It's pretty common to bog out just before you hit water.
