I know they say less, but I don't go out fishing with less than 6" of ice and the odd time I drive my truck on (1 ton diesel) i won't do it with less than 24". I know everyone is going to say that is overkill but you asked for totally safe and i feel totally safe with those numbers. I drive my snowmobile on lakes that have 8".
