Welcome to the forum . Secondly even if the ice looks ok Id stay away , you don't want to be that group of people reported on the 6:00 news or the 3 rd page of the news paper that RCMP and Divers searching for missing family presumed dead . Wait a few weeks , im sure theres some area trout ponds darn near free of ice or even enough to chuck a line out from shore . I think those might be better options for the safety of yourself and your family . Just thinking out loud .
