Default Happy -Canada Day

Thought this would be worth sharing .....

D.

There are so many reasons to love Canada: freedom and opportunity, public education, and universal healthcare, welcoming citizens, diversity, natural beauty, and amazing landscapes from coast to coast to coast!

This year marks Canada’s 153rd birthday; in comparison the United States is 244 years old. In the last 25 years much has changed in Canada. No longer are conversations being held in school about North American comparisons, instead our history and identity are being learned and appreciated, the high points as well as where we need to improve.

Here are some lesser known facts about Canada:

While most people think of Australia when they think of snakes, Manitoba is the snake capital of the world, having the highest concentration of snakes. In May, over 70,000 snakes come out of hibernation!

Canada produces 85% of the World’s Maple syrup and 80% of global green lentil exports are from Our neighbors in Saskatchewan!

Quebec City has over 4.6 kms of fortifications, it is the only walled city north of Mexico and was the first city in North America to be become a UNESCO heritage site.

In 1967, St. Paul Alberta created the world’s first landing pad for aliens. Canada’s Defense Minister, Paul Hellyer was present for the unveiling. It also contains a time capsule that will be opened in 2067!

We have National Parks that are bigger than some countries! The Wood Buffalo National park is the largest National Park in the country.

Just under 90% of Canada is largely uninhabited… and we also have the largest coastline in the World.

The name Canada comes from the Huron-Iroquois word Kanata, which means village or settlement.

The first inhabitants of North America arrived in Canada at least 14,000 years ago!

The world’s most northerly sand dunes are in Athabasca Provincial park in northwest Saskatchewan.

In 2018, the median age of Canadians was 41 years old.

Winding its way between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, the Bay of Fundy encompasses 170 miles of craggy cliffs. The specific size of the bays helps to create the world’s most extreme tides!

The Royal Montreal Golf Club is the oldest Golf Club in North America!

The California roll was invented in Vancouver!

Hamilton, Ontario bears responsibility for inventing the Hawaiian pizza!

Peanut butter innovator Marcellus Edison, a Pharmacist in Montreal patented “peanut paste” (butter); and in a more sophisticated form, now found in 94% of households!

Canada Day in our homes is marked by BBQ’s, sitting outdoors (if the mosquitoes don’t carry us away), and enjoying the company of friends and family, hope that on July 1st you have a terrific day; however, you might choose to spend it!
