I don't think many patients wear masks. As far as I know, very few front-line workers who have been using proper protective equipment have contracted the virus. See for example

I think we also have to assume that there are relatively few people as infectious as those sick enough to be treated in hospital and that we are staying 2 m away from everybody in the first place, unlike the situation in hospitals.
The masks will just make everyone that much safer.
