I'll cast my vote for Humminbird. I had a Lowrance HDS7 Gen 1 and now have a Humminbird Helix 9 SI with auto hart linked to my MinnKota. I can honestly say that the two pieces of electronics have changed the way I fish immensely.

Build a depth contour map of your lake in real time and have your trolling motor follow the contour lines at the speed you set, adjusting for wind and waves to keep your speed consistent and steering for you. It's pretty amazing. Lowrance and Motorguide have a similar set up as well.

If you just want basic I would at least get something with GPS to make tracks and waypoints, as well as small enough to put in a portable kit to use ice fishing if you wanted. A Helix 5 or 7 Sonar - GPS would be great.
