Having those facilities, to begin with, has spurred interest and participation such that a number of world class competitors success can be traced directly back to having them. There have been many international events and much training held in Calgary and area because of those facilities, so the economic benefit is not a one time thing, but returns to some extent, year after year.

I think the biggest failure of the 88 olympics was the athlete housing which was hastily and flimsily built.

I think that if Calgary were to have to build facilities from the ground up, I'd be against the bid, but as the facilities already exist and are well used, I think the bid should go ahead.
2x... just imagine what a boost to the local economy this would be.
