I've owned and shot Ruger Number 1's since 1978.
My first was a used 1B in 7mm Rem Mag with spectacular wood produced in 1973.
My second was a new 1B in 22-250 purchased from Lever Arms for $400.00 with fence post plain walnut.
My latest a 1A in 22 Hornet with colour case hardening
I have not purchased a # 1 since without at least seeing pictures.
My opinion after owning quite a few.
First consideration is wood quality, second cartridge desireability, then price.
Lucky for us Ruger has chambered the # 1 in a number of less common cartridges.
Some of the more memorable ones I have owned or still own.
1A 22 Hornet
1A 222 Remington
1S 218 Bee
1B 225 Winchester
1AH 25.06 24" barrel no sights one of the best balanced #1's
K1A 6.5x55 (walnut stainless) it has a great new home
1A 275 Rigby with New Zealand Walnut
1A 280 Rem
RSI in 243, 257 Roberts, 6.5x55, 270,7x57, 300 RCM
1A 30-30
1S 38-55
1S 405 Winchester
1S 475 Linebaugh
1D Lyman Commerative 45-70
The more common chamberings 22-250 ,270,30-06, 7mm Rem Mag,300 Win Mag do not hold their value well.
Neither does the 1H in 458 Win, though these are often like new with few rounds fired.
1S 45-70 Is always a lot of fun to shoot as well as the 1H in 375 H&H.
With limited yearly production and new prices exceeding the $2000.00 #1 have become a even smaller niche market.
Good news for buyers in today's economy #1 can be found for $900-$1200, no so good for the sellers.
They are a classy and cool gun.
