I'm heavy and not as sprite as I was in my youth and I fish with a guy 6 inches shorter, twice my age and about the same weight,,, 4" for good clear ice and 6" if we're puzzled by how it looks,, patches, snow, crusting, bubbly/aerated ice, etc
Getting to the open water is the hard part. To get back to shore is easy, just hit it at full throtle.
