Cougars are deer specialists. Ambush attack with little energy used. A couple of cougars would be harder on your deer herd than a pack of wolves IMO. A mother with cubs probably kills one every other day when the cubs are little and maybe even one a day as they near maturity.
Sorry but you are still kidding yourself, deer are easy pickings for wolves and coyotes.
Deer are sprinters/canines are marathon runners.
A WT deer usually only runs a few hundred meters to escape danger, they don’t have the stamina to outdistance the relentless pursuit of a wolf pack, and even if they do escape for now, their lungs aren’t built for long distance running and they can catch nemonia and die when harassed by not only wild canines but domestic dogs allowed to run at large. In NB at least,a dog running deer will be shot on sight by the Game Wardens and many hunters take it upon them self to end their deer running days as well.
Wolves annhialated a favourite area of mine a few years ago, mild winter in between deer seasons and it went from loaded with deer one year to barely a track to be found the next when the wolves moved in.
Good news is,deer are not moose and can repopulate an area exponentially quicker the moose,so no,it won’t take 20 years as speculated in a previous post.
