I think that if you tried them on plywood or something you would get a good indication of toughness. In the past I have used three-quarter inch. Put your broadhead target behind it or you will probably strip the fletches off your arrow.
Just a word of caution though, I have only tested them on fixed blade broadheads. You may damage mechanicals.
