I agree - and if the argument is "tracing the electrical use" keep in mind 99% of the grow ops steal power upstream of the meter.
Using Batteries would require a MASSIVE amount of solar panels OR conventional electricity to recharge them. Just too much work for lazy thieves. Much easier to cut a live line and steal power.
