If you were to go this route and tenting, it may be worthwhile to also rent a small single axle cargo trailer (U-haul), to keep all of your camping supplies/luggage in. This way the van wouldn't be too cramped with cargo, and you would have fewer projectiles in the passenger compartment. Also it would nice to have an alternate place for cargo if it happens to rain during your camping trip, wet tents/coolers etc. not too fun to have in vehicle.

I saw a large multi-generational family from Saskatchewan do this once with a passenger van and a cargo trailer. It seemed to work well, and they were the only other family that we saw outside in the evenings around the campfire as the rest of the campers were inside their big holiday trailers/motor homes watching TV.
