For the average guy....Sharpen the top edge only. The bottom edge (the edge that sits on the ice) is best left alone. Top edge only and sharpen unill you can feel a slight burr form Leave the burr there, resist the urge to knock it off from the bottom edge. Go cut your holes and the burr will fall off. This is the most fool proof way of sharpening auger blades but still requires some knowledge and skill on sharpening steel.
