Newell Lake Access
Just wondering if anyone has been down to Newell lately. Wondering how the access is and how deep the snow is on the lake. Am thinking of going to Jackfish bay on Saturday. Thanks

If I get out mid week like I hope to, I'll let you know. That's the spot I wanted to hit this week, curious about the snow level too.

I have yet to Ice fish Jackfish before, only spring fishing for big hogs (and the odd Eye, lots of little perch in there too), so it will be an experience. I do have some GPS marks for the different areas throughout the bay so I should be able to hit decent areas with minimal searching. So many spots........so little time!

Fished Jackfish on Saturday...access is a little touch and go but should be much better by the weekend.
Fishing was good, but nothing massive to speak of. Didn't chance breaking trail to my usual spots.

There is access at the park as well as north of park.
Didn't check any way to Jackfish but didn't see any trucks south of park.
Little Rainier access blown in but looked like someone got into Big Rainier at one time.
There's a mini city of ice huts north of the park.
Take a shovel....chances are pretty good you will use it if you stray off the beaten path.
Didnt fish Newell but managed a couple on RHR in a few hours.

WayneChristie I was really hoping to fish the West side of the lake but I have a feeling my favorite spot might be snowed in.

I was watching the snow level drop all day at work, should be a lot less by the weekend anyways.

I was on Newell both Sat and Sun and the going was tough. Tracks blew in Sat evening and dif dragged going in through Redelbacks-we pulled one very stuck rig out. Driving on lake was tough as well especially if you were breaking your own trail. Didnt see whites but the pike were biting well. Access out of jackfish was tricky getting onto shore.A poor sole tried access with a car and got buried.

I have been wanting to check out the point from the big island out there, if you look on the map. theres a place where people launch boats close by and if the drifts arent too bad we might be able to drive out that way. could be some decent fish in walking range if not too.

Hey Wayne,
I am pretty sure I know where you guys are talking about. If you can get on the lake there make sure to head out towards the opening of the bay and set you tip ups and lines out there. Every year during the derby there is a couple guys that end up getting into some big old gurls. Make sure you are there before sun up to insure you get the breakfast bite.

Going to try again this Saturday to get to Newell, is the snow melting enough to get on the lake or is it really sloppy now.
Thanks

Finally made it down to Newell on Saturday, one set of tracks on to Jackfish bay, looks like no one has been out to their shacks on their for a while. Went on at the bay but got stuck, thanks to the guys that gave me a pull. If you get off the only track you'll probably get stuck. If it doesn't improve before the tournament it is going to be tough sleding out there. Ended up fishing by the homes on the north end where the snow wasn't as bad. The snow was wet making it hard to get around. Strong wind from the north but no drifting as the heat had put a bit of a crust on top. Only caught one pike.
Got my ticket for the derby, see they are adding an additional contest, $100.00 per hole near the Sailing club fish from 9-12 on the sunday, 50% of the take for the largest legal pike.
Again Thanks Brian for the pull out appreciate it

Made it out to Jackfish today....with the wife and kids! Took my time and didn't get stuck...barely with the swearing and yelling don't you get @#$% stuck. 3 other trucks got stuck while I was out there. Lots of drifting snow and deep ruts all over in the tracks to the small island at jackfish. Was fishing by noon. Had tip ups and the shack for the kids.
Had a
GREAT afternoon fishing. Landed 11(wife and 2 kids) 25 lber(48.5 "). 11. couple 7-8. 6 or so hammer handles. Kids got to see a monster in the shack on camera and the little girl landed an 8 in there as well. No wind and a balmy -7. It was a great afternoon. No pics as my NEW camera had DEAD batteries. Carefull if heading out there as getting stuck is a definite possibility!
