Fish & Wildlife Officers Now Part of Alberta Sheriff's
News release this morning from Alberta Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Branch:
ANNOUNCEMENT
As of October 1, members of the Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Branch are joining the Alberta Sheriffs and will now be called the Alberta Sheriffs – Conservation Services.
This integration does not change anything for Albertans. Under the new banner of Alberta Sheriffs – Conservation Services, these officers will maintain the same mandate and perform the same primary functions to:
- help conserve and protect the province’s natural resources by ensuring everyone understands and complies with wildlife and fisheries legislation,
- ensure the public’s safety and protection of property in regards to wildlife.
You can still contact the same local offices across the province by reaching out to one of offices listed on this page: https://www.alberta.ca/fish-and-wildlife-contacts.aspx
Members of the public can continue to report suspicious or illegal hunting or fishing activity and dangerous wildlife emergencies through the 24-hour Report A Poacher line at 1-800-642-3800 or online at alberta.ca/report-poacher.aspx.
Fish and wildlife officers have always had strong working relationships with Alberta’s sheriffs with the same goal of keeping everyone safe. The integration of the two organizations into one service will result in coordinated command, as well as reduced administration costs.
On this note, the Alberta Sheriffs – Conservation Services is looking forward to continuing to serve Albertans, side-by-side with our new colleagues.
Mr Conservation

Let's hope the level of service does not diminish as it relates to conservation.
Time will tell I guess.

Cynical me thinks this is to get them to produce more revenue by giving speeding and seat belt tickets.

Yes, we need more speeding and seat belt enforcement.
That is what the people are calling for.

They are still hard at work. My wife and I were out taking pics of the full moon, and on our way back home we got pulled over by a F&W officer. When he looked in the truck and saw my wife's camera, he said that explaines the muzzle flash we saw up in the hills. Nice to see they are out there not only from 8 to 4.

Sheriffs have always carried a sidearm, even before they were sheriffs and it was CAPS

Nothing changes except the name designation for the Conservation Officers (C.O.s). Not sure if they will change to the Sheriffs uniform or not.

The sheriffs will slowly squeeze the RCMP out of Alberta.
They can now do roadside alcohol and drug testing, as before they needed the help from the RCMP.
Alberta has “ integrated traffic units” ( rcmp and sheriffs working together out of the same office) that is slowly being dismantled.
Sheriffs soon will have their own free standing detachments, no more sharing with the RCMP.
The sheriffs are also working with the DOT , and work out of their office like the one at the Airdrie truck scales.

Makes about as much sense as centralizing 911 services.

Yup, nothing like calling 911 for a man with a weapon in Sherwood Park and getting transferred to Grand Prairie 3 times before they get it right......
Hopefully this will allow F&W to better prosecute the poachers and clear up some red tape by not needing to call the Mount Me's when there are extra infractions involved.

Very scary, if we ever get a semi competent sheriff police force in Alberta. They will be great at chasing young farmers on tractors.
Now F & W can join in the chase.

My only concern is if F&W are going to get tied up with extra tasks leading to a lack of enforcement for wildlife offenses
If they are taking on more responsibility they also need an increase in man power

Soon we will now see a F&W officer on a creeper under your semi, Checkin for air leaks or a caged brake pot...
Sweet.
