just wondering if anyone out there knows how to fish the wetaskiwin special properly? i watch them come in on the camera but they won't comit. do you wait for them to suck it off the bottom or let them hit it on the drop? put bait on it or what? the fish seem fascinated by it but lose interest quickly. thanks for any info much appreciated. good luck everyone hope you all get a big one this winter!

I find they scare the fish to death. You need a small tiny presentation tipped with 1 maggot then your hooking percentage will be higher...

yeah thats how i prefer to catch them too. its just the one lake i fish that has the monster whites where the buggers won't touch a wireworm and i've seen guys get the odd one on the wetaskiwin. quite the challenge to say the least!

I've only been able to catch burbot on them in March when they are shallow & aggressive mostly. Did catch 1 whitefish a couple winters ago on a small copper one loaded with meal worms but none since.

I've spent a fair amount of time watching whites and how the wetaskiwin lure moves in the water. What I've come to the conclusion is that the whitefish are attracted to the flashing but they don't really bite it. However, the design of the wetaskiwin really flutters and moves very erratically around (and sideways quite a bit) when jigged hard and you actually end up snagging the whitefish (although usually near the mouth/head) as they come close to investigate. Hence the reason for the four point design. However, when the lure is still, sometimes you do get whites come into investigate and then when you vibrated/jig a little, some of them will strike, maybe out of aggression or some other wierd reason.

The other method I've seen is bouncing the lures off the bottom, I think the vibration attracts them too. I've tested this at night by letting the lure sit still and nothing comes near it but as soon as I bounce it off stuff a bit, I'll usually notice something come close to check it out.

I've been observing the hordes fishing at Mac and to be honest many of them are basically snagging the whites as they swim in the tight schools. I did see a CO out there so I hope they were observant but they were probably way too busy to watch everyone closely. I'm not sure how to call in to report people that are snagging the fish as it really looks from a far that they are jigging and catch the fish near the mouth. You basically have to fish next to them to watch how they are coming out of the hole but how can you prove it to the COs? Sorry to derail the topic, had to rant a little.
