6lb vanish if fishing gull or buck or battle where a guy has a shot at 3lb plus fish. 4 lb vanish at sylvan because of clarity and smaller average size. I've broken off more whites on 6lb then I care to mention. But they are line shy so what do you do.

A long leader of 2x fluorocarbon tippet tied to 10 lbs braid works well for me.

8 lb again this morning at Sylvan. No hesitation. I like the lighter lines but can't be bothered after getting snapped off on anything 6lb or less at Pigeon. I've been using 8 lb for years. No issues.

8lb ultra green is a great line caught lots of rainbow trout with that line and they are also very line shy

Thank you guys. Right now my rod is loaded with 4lb test. I will have to bring some 8lb along just in case . Tight Lines

If your fishing Sylvan no problem. That Pigeon will humble you with 4lb. I've fought huge whites there for almost 10 minutes before getting my 6 lb snapped. It kind of upsets you...

If you are worried about line shyness then there is nothing better to use then fluorocarbon tippet like ghostguy recommended. 3X(8 lb) is is roughly the same size as the 4 lb you guys are using and twice as strong... I too would use 10 lb braid, power pro ice tec to be exact although you could just put a spool of tippet on a reel if you wanted to.

If breaking of on 6 lb test I would check your knot style or the line age. 6 lb is my go to line. 8lb for pike. 6 for whites and trout. 6 or 4 for perch.

The last 3 years I’ve just used regular Triline in 10# and 6#. Never had a problem and caught tons of white fish off the Flathead lake in Montana. Even pulled in a few decent Lakers with that.

6 pound vanish is pretty versatile, you get a little more back bone than 4 pound but I find what ever formula it is that vanish uses it really does disappear and I've never had issues with the line turning away fish. Usually the thing that spooks them is me jumping the gun on the hook set and ripping it right out from under their nose! Haha.

I have brought in more than one pike using 6 pound vanish and a small tungsten jig or wire worm while trying my hardest to catch a white. I just can't stay away from the toothy critters it seems, even when my buddies are pulling whites out of their hole not even 10 feet away from me haha. (they were using 6 pound as well)

I try to use as thin line as I can get with decent strength for whitefish. 0.15mm is my norm. Fly fishing department has these lines for a leaders. You can get a lot thinner line with better strength than Vanish or similar. Reel drag and knots are important think to be successful.

They break off when they are too thick to squeeze thru the 8 inch hole. Happens all the time. Once you get their head started you are committed. Some times it works sometimes it doesn't. I'm not snapping off runts silly.

I use either 6# or 8# mostly but have been known to go as low as 4#

8# Berkley Trilene Cold weather Fluorescent blue if there are pike around
6# Matzuo copolymer in most other situations
4# if they exhibit any indication of being line shy in clear water

I prefer light action rods, my main jigging rod is a Frabill 371 quicktip Crappie rod with strike indicator tip and my dead stick is either a Berkly light action or Frabill med light BRO series.

I hit a 8lb year class at lac st Anne one year. You may need to fight the bigger ones. An eight inch hole should not be a problem.

But call me silly.

i use 8# Vanish for ice fishing Lake Whitefish

here is a summer open water Lake Whitefish on Fly Rod

i used fluorocarbon 20# tippet (line)

didn't have any line shy fish either on 16# tippet

Did have lots of break off on 4# n 6# tippets

but my 6# tippet did break at 2.8 # n gave me a 2# WR

Guys if I’m using 6lb mono green in color, will the color deter white fish?

Guys I have been recommended Sufix Ice Magic Mono from a few of the guys at Cabelas for White fishing. They were telling me the 8lb is literally invisible in the water . Has any one here used this line in the clear color?
