Looking at buying a new quad
Wondering what folks think the best is and why
Leaning towards a non belt drive… possibly a Honda

What are your thoughts

You will get the same answer as always.

Buy a (insert brand here) because that’s what I have and I always have to pull (insert brand here) out of the mud or bush or skeg when we go riding.

That said. I currently have a Honda Pioneer 500 and am very happy with it.

For over 45 years of riding quads

There's only one, for longivity , safe and dependable .....
If you rely on your quad totally .. to get you home

Default Real transmission.

Pick the price and features you want from any of the big names.

Avoiding the belt drives is a good plan.

My 94 Yamaha Kodiak has been very good to me. It will likely out last me.

Ive had two Honda 420 ranchers in the past 16 years. I would buy another one no doubt.

I have driven a Polaris and its far nicer driving and more comfortable than my Honda.

I drove a Yamaha for about an hour one day and thought it drove and handled better than my Honda

So, I bought a 2024 Honda 420 rancher.......

I had the RZR back in 2012 for about two yrs. Loved it. But then went to a Ranger 800 midsize for practical reasons, then went to a Ranger 570 full size , then a P500, then a Yamaha Viking, then back to the P500. Also for a short time I had a Rhino.
All were great machines The P500 is convenient and easier to store. As it fits in the shed.
The P500 goes down a lot of skinny trails the Viking was a bit wide for. The Viking was a better 4x4 but the P500 makes up for it with size. If I had more room in the garage I would still have the Viking

I don’t ride as much anymore and it mostly gets used in the fall chasing grouse

If you want a good reliable hunting quad go with Honda or Yamaha. You will not lose with either. Reliable, strong and long lasting. These two are great working machines.

If your looking for a reliable machine a Yamaha in kodiak or grizzly would be a nice choice. Very reliable and work horse machines that can handle anything!!!! I made the mistake when I bought mine thinking power more than weight and reliability. Love my can am but anything in a 500 or 600 hr power is plenty for anything.

I agree... Grizzly all the way! I've had all the major brands over the years... Yamaha makes a really good reliable machine!

Well, I don't know what the best is, but I do know I've had a Polaris, and my grandpa had a Polaris, and wouldn't recommend them based on that.

Honda for reliability unless things have changed it’s been a while since I bought a new quad. I bought a ringcon 680 it’s a 2008 I don’t use it to often any more and it still works good when I need it. I had a Yamaha grizzly before the Honda and I didnt like it but from what I heard they improved quite a bit since then.

You can't really go wrong with either Yamaha or Honda, Grizzky/Kodiak or Rancher/Foreman...

As indicated by all the replies from both camps.

One of the Japanese quads. I the the Suzuki King Quads are probably a good machine still, but haven't heard much lately. The Honda are good machines for sure, but they were always down on power and clearance. As far as I know they still don't have a locking front diff which Suzuki had in 92 or earlier.... That discounts the Honda for me.

Haven't heard great things about Polaris reliability, and don't really trust the AWD system. Believe the big ones are quite heavy.

Can Am, or at least the big ones have a ton of power. I believe the 850 is about 200 pounds heavier than mine. Some mixed reviews on reliability, at least what I've heard.

Yamahas are great machines. Very nearly bought a Kodiak 700 new. Ended up buying a used Kawasaki Brute Force 650i. They also also have a great rep for durability. Mine starts better than my hunting partner's Honda when it's cold. Takes a few tries at about -25, but it'll fire up. Carbed machine. I love the clearance, handling, power delivery and the sealed rear brake is a nice feature. The front variable clutch to bias or completely lock up the front differential is really a game changer. It's really nice to be able to grab it and have it no matter how fast, slow, or whether your wheels are spinning. Can feather it, or pull it partway when you need a little help. Only thing is it's kinda inconvenient not being able to lock it in when you're operating a winch or off the side/front pushing.

I wanted a gear box Honda at first, but I really like the response of a CVT now. And it's nice to be able to change your clutching for response or bigger tires also.

Without a doubt the honda foreman. 450es not the best ride or speed but can go anywhere and takes a beating.

I recently purchased a can am hd7 pro. Single cylinder 650. The pro has heated down gearing, stiffer suspension and 6 ply tires vs 4. I got the base model with no power steering and steel wheels. Same price as a rancher 420 or Kodiak 450. But far more quad in my opinion. I only have about 150 km on it so far but I’m impressed.

I agree. The one thing that annoys me on my Honda is the transmission. I think the CVT is just a better system especially for cruising trails.

I’m on my 3rd Polaris Sportsman. This one is a 2019 570 utility edition with power steering. First 2000 model 500 was awesome. Second 2009 500HO model one was a huge POS from day one with wiring harness issues and never ran nice. Jury still out on this third one but so far it’s been really good. Both of my rangers have been good. Polaris rides really nice.

I also have a bare bones Honda rancher 420. If reliable is what you are after that is the one I would buy.

Owned Yamaha, Suzuki and Honda. All were good quads. Had the Yamaha and a Honda at same time, Yamaha rode better.

Have wrenched on Polaris a lot and Kawasaki some. Would not take a Polaris for free!!! Kawasaki are a real pain in the ass to work on. Have to take half the quad apart to change plugs, adjust valaves or even change the oil. Kawasaki perform good but the problem to work on them means a no from me.

I bought a Honda 400 Foreman in 2000. When I moved to Edm sold the 2012 Yamaha and a 2010 Honda but I still have that 2000 Honda quad becuase it was one of the last that was short enough to fit in the box with the canopy on. Quad hunts every year and plows snow all winter. Outside of oil changes, one battery and a couple of plugs, only thing I have done to it was replace the front wheel bearings and the speedo drive about 4 years ago. Hard to beat that for reliability.

In order I’ve owned them Suzuki, Yamaha, Polaris, arctic cat, Suzuki, Polaris, Can am, Honda.
The Arctic cat was an under powered poor handling and poor clutching. The Suzuki, I got sick of replacing plastic push pins and after a couple thousand km the rubber motor mounts were toast.
The Can am was by far the best handling, best power, best ride and the worst to work on.
Now that I’m an old bugger and don’t need to go fast or jump things I bought a new Rubicon 520. With a 1/3 the hp of the Canam it definitely isn’t fast with a top speed of 67km/hr but at least I don’t have to wrench on it every time I take it out.

In 2004/5 I bought two Honda fourtrax 350fm quads.

Still got them and use the regularly for anything and everything on the property and in the bush.

Many others have bought, sold, traded etc and I still show up with what simply works.
