Keeping sport fish for pets?
Is this illegal or do you need a license or something?

I think that's a hard no. It would be pretty cool to make up an aquarium of native Alberta fish though.

Illegal and stupid. Look what has happened with alien fish in other waters. Please don't do it.

I agree they should allow you to have native fish in your area.
No different than having gold fish
Most that could happen is you will flush your small pike back into the Sask. river.
It should be regulated on the type of fish that you have in your drainage system?

I beg of you to reconsider. You are way too high.
Some years ago I visited a neighbor who had a 500 gallon fish tank in his porch. He put a wild kokanee in that tank and it went crazy swimming around and around until you could not see through the water it had disturbed the filthy gravel so bad. There was a cat watching all this; he could not see that little salmon but he knew it was there.
Soon enough that kokanee leapt from the tank and landed behind the freezer that the tank sat on. That cat was on that fish and the ruckus created by the cat/fish fight was wildly amusing while it lasted. The cat emerged victorious and well fed so we went back to the beer.
If you keep wild fish, get rid of your cat! And put a lid on the tank. And remove the gravel and scenery. And maybe not snag fish that you don't intend to eat.

Unless the pike you transplanted from one watershed ( ABC Lake) had a parasite not present in the other watershed ( XYZ river) and you just transplanted that parasite.
"same species" isn't the only issue to consider.
That's the concern you might just be missing.

Definitely a kid based on his youtube videos/channel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FpmySEcziD4 that he linked in another thread.
Could still be a weird kid though...

.....and like most all wild creatures whether legal or illegal, or otherwise, they don’t morally or consciously deserve to be anybody’s pets regardless of what the rule book may say about it. If you want a pet, may I suggest saving one of the thousands of lives already on kijiji or at the humane society. Man has domesticated plenty enough already, no need to keep throwing more species on the pile.....

Perfectly legal. Give them a name, feed them, pet them, whatever you want... Just make sure you leave them in the waterbody you found them...
Actually I take that back, it is illegal to feed them as well unless you are doing so by attaching it to a hook lol.

I knew a guy who had a pike in a tank back home in Ontario.
I thought it was extremely strange

It would be cool to have a large tank full of perch, beautiful fish.
And when one hit the 12" mark it gets eatin!

I bought some small hatchery trout for my licensed pond and kept 6 or so in a 110gal tank in the living room for a while. They were extremely spooky, splashing water, and slamming into the tank sides. They were stressed and wouldn’t eat either. After a short time they were netted out and put in the pond.

Many years ago [50] in Ontario I had a tank set up with sunfish in it they were 2-3 inches long. I also had a couple crayfish about the same size, a bullfrog and a small turtle. I somehow got lucky and found a balance in the tank and seldom had to clean it other than a 'vacuuming' once in a while. I also had live native plants in it. Feeding time i would drop a few worms in and those sunfish went after them like parahnas. i aslo dipped minnows out of local waters. They were young ones ad only about 1 inch long. The ones who didn't get eaten immediately would find cover and survive sometimes for a week or so. Even the turtle would feast on the minnows. I was surprised he could catch them. Any fly that landed on the wirecover was lunch.
Is it legal here??? No idea but it was educational.
