Options needed 270
I had posted earlier about buying a 243, after thinking about it for a while I wouldn't use a 243 as much as I thought and currently owning a 300 WSM it would be hard to carry just a 243 and watch an elk tease me while I'm hunting deer and haven't tagged out ( as that is often the case ). I'm tossing around the idea of putting my 300 on consignment at the local gun store and spending some good coin on an all round gun that would give me versatility, personally I think that would be a 270. I have really taking liking to the browning x-bolt stainless stalker and would spend the money and put quality optics on it. Thoughts or reviews on what you guys shoot for your " all purpose gun" or reviews on the browning SS x bolt?
Thanks

I like your cartridge choice. 270 Win is hard to beat for an all round Alberta cartridge. I just recently picked up a Sako Finnlight in 270 Win.
I have had an XBolt and feel it is an excellent rifle. I would not hesitate to get another. It fit me really well. Shouldn't have sold it. Might have to buy another

How does the recoil feel on your 300 WSM?

My300 wsm definitely has some bite, it isn't a gun I like to sit behind and shoot boxes of shells through, I found that for the first bit of sighting it in I was for lack of a better word scared of it but I grew to like it.

The 270 will be way more fun then.
I had a 308 and downsized to a 260.

I guess it depends on what kind of all around gun you want. If you want to hunt predators and throw in the odd deer a 243 is fine. If you want to hunt mostly deer with the odd moose or elk thrown in 270 is a better choice. 25-06 may be another one to look at.
What is the reasoning for selling the 300? Just bored of it or didn't like?

Browning are nice rifles and the 270 fits your stated criteria very well, as would the 7mm08. If the X bolt fits then buy it new or post a thread on this forum that you are looking for one.

I like the 270WSM but nothing wrong with 270. Maybe a 7mm-08 would be another great pick. 6.5x55 Swede is another.

270 Win YES!!!!!
If I had to use only ONE cartridge for an all around "Albert Game" gun, it would be my 270 win, hands down. More than enough power to take most big game we hunt here. I love my 270, wouldnt trade it for anything. find a load with a good quality 130gr bullet and your set.
Cheers, Dudes 2010

Selling firearms just because they don't get used as much as others?!?! I hope this doesn't catch on....
I refuse to own firearms that don't get hunted. Having said that, most of mine only get to go for a walk once every year or so, but they get hunted!

Nothing wrong with the 300wsm for deer as long as one uses bullets that don't grenade. Still like you said, not a gun you want to shoot a lot at one sitting. For many years I used a 308 on moose, elk and deer and it did very well. Hard to beat a 308, 270 or the trusty old 3006 for that matter. One thing about either of these three is ammo is cheap to buy.

Nothing wrong with 270 and yes I have one, but I've hunted with quite a number of different cartridges and it would not be my "Alberta all-round cartridge", wouldn't even make the top 5 for me. If there were only two rifles in the rack and one was a 270 and the other was a 280, the 270 would be left at home. In fact come to think of it, it always does get left at home. Not that the 280 gets out a lot either, but given the choice of the two.........
That being said, would I feel under-gunned in Alberta with a 270 and the right bullets.....of course not.

Cmon Abe, Al Baker used to say God shot one!
I use mine just as often as my 300, but I don't hunt much deer, mostly bigger stuff. So many good rounds out there, but If I had to go to one, it would be my 270 I think, mostly cause it's done so well for me.

Al was one of the few ppl that used the right bullets at the time Speer Grand Slams. I have another freind that used 150's and he did well with his as well. In fact when I worked up a load with mine it was based on his experiences with 270's Now, there are several good bullets available.

The great Jack O'Connor staked his professional reputation (a considerable one at the time) on promoting the .270 caliber in the middle years of the last century. I bought mine partly because of this, but also because it suits hunting in Alberta to a 'T'. Mine comes wrapped up by Remington - 700 custom mountain.

I've gone modern with it, mostly sees 140g TSX's, close to 2900 at the muzzle. That's out of a 22" Rem Mountain rifle, totally stock, never bedded, shoots the lights out!!

I am not recommending you sell your rifle, but if you do, I would suggest starting here in the Buy and Sell before consignment. Consignment will not get you as much for it. Also, if you can buy a new one and have both, why not buy it before selling this one??? You may end up wanting both or selling the new one instead.
My experience with an xbolt is that it is very accurate but I do not care for the magazine or the action. Didn't fit me overly well either, so I guess if you find one you like, I'd go for it because it will be a shooter. Found sako (even the sako a7) and tikka are very accurate too...I'd choose one of them over the xbolt.
I'd also choose the 280 over the 270 or 30-06, but I doubt I'd notice the difference if someone switched it out while I wasn't looking.
Have fun with buying a new rifle!

all around gun
This may be a bit onthe subjective side of a few , there is nothing wrong with the 243 taking lk anð moose. I. Personally have owned a 270 , and do own a sàko 25-06 , shooting both there is little difference out to 300 meters. This is where the veloity of the 25-06 shows up. Check out the tables of bullet drops and velocities. As for a 243 , I have witnessed shots on moose out to 450 yds., and elk to 350 , all and I say all where taken with one bullet and no follow up . In my opinion it is the person behind the gun that is more important than the calibre you shoot. Better to have one gun you can shoot very well than several you can't. My son now has the 270 and is deadly with it, he shot a whitetail buck 5 times with 5 shots going through the bush and has taken an elk with it , just one shot .

I like the .270 win and a buddy uses his for everything. That being said I prefer the 7-08. Why you ask? I have no idea lol just sounds cooler I guess.

I like the .270 Win because it'll kill almost anything around my neck of the woods dead, and it's low-key enough on the kick side that I can possibly someday convince the missus to try it out. I'm always on the lookout for something that's even lighter, though. I have a daughter who I'm hoping to start out at 12 (okay, so in 9.5 years, but hey, I like to think about this stuff), and was thinking of a 243 for that. It's the minimum calibre that's legal for deer in my province.
I would not be replacing my .270, though. Just adding to the safe...
Not trying to hijack, but has anyone got any thoughts on the 308 vs 270 Win in terms of recoil?
Also, I have no experience with the Brownings at all, but they sure *look* cool...

The 270 is a great all rounder. For your daughter, start watching for a good bolt action 250 Savage. They are hard to come by but are a perfect starter cartridge and with over 9 years to go you should be able to find one.

The rifle will have way more impact on recoil then the caliber. In the same rifle there's not much diff.

Yip thats what I mean about the right bullet. Much more available now...used to be 130's or 150's not much else.
I'm using 150's outta my Winchester Featherweight that I bought from Bob Prestash just for the wood.
Bob held it up when I entered the store, I said "how much"...."I'll take it, what calibre is it" ?....Fiddleback the whole length of the stk. ..needed a pressure pt on the fore end and then shot real nice.
Wood stkd Mtn rifle?

Not that the 280 gets out a lot either, but given the choice of the two.........
That being said, would I feel under-gunned in Alberta with a 270 and the right bullets.....of course not.

Yup, me too. If I was forced to one gun for all my local hunting, it would be a 280 or a 7x57. I hope I never have to make that a reality.

Yep, mines a wood stocked job.
And don't worry Bob knew my weaknesses just like everyone else. He got me on more then a few he had hidden behind the back door in wait A good time for sure at Trail.
