Default Tilley hats, what are you wearing?

I'm thinking of adding one of these to my father's day / birthday list. I check them out when I'm in Cabelas. But not sure which would be better. I'd be wearing while fishing and camping and such.

What do you prefer?

I have a Tilley in a closet somewhere, haven't worn it for years. My Henschel has been everywhere with me, crushed in my luggage too many times to count. I just like it better.

Dont own a Tilley but I am on my 6th Bailey Firehole and a Stetson cattleman. Both are quality hard wearing hats.

I just never found a Tilley to fit my square head

Meh, I only wear a full hat when fishing and for that this Tilley knock off suits me just fine. 25 vs 90ish. Wash em when they get sweaty and they last a long time.

I have a Windriver that looks exactly the same. The vented top is great in hot weather. It has travelled the world too. I tried a Tilley, found it hot and not very good looking after getting it crushed and wet but they are tough and last. I use the Tilley when it is colder out.

I have their Boonie "jungle hat" (circa ~1988) that I was recently reunited with after a 20 yr hibernation in my mother's storage...

* still in excellent condition, BTW !

Mine is obviously much older, and IIRC doesn't have the loops stitched into the outer headband like the current version seen below.

I wear their waxed cotton outback hunting, fishing puttering around the place etc.
I habe a couple others, the hemp hat and the ltm5. Both just don’t seem to breathe at all. Way too hot for most days.
The Outback seems a lot more comfortable.

T5 Hemp will be the most durable, with the classic look. I wear mine all summer and don't find it too hot.

Was just going through my albums to see if I could find pics of my hat, it looks better then that pic I posted. I came across a couple from trip to Australia and Bolivia, but this is when I caught my marlin in Cabo in 2012? On a hot day, that mesh is the best. I used to soak the whole hat in the ice water in bottom of cooler and put it back on. Like air conditioning on your cabesa. That hat has been beaten around lots, and washed plenty. Still in good shape.

I always wanted a tilley had since I was a kid, but I could never justify it in the budget.
A decade ago I found one washed up on a beach that was basically my size. Washed it up and wore it every summer for a decade.
Finally that hat didn't survive the washing machine, so I turned it in for warranty. They mailed me a waxed cotton "outback" hat for a 20 dollar "exchange fee".
I do wish they still made my old one though: it's white on top, with green under the brim, and snap up sides.
I keep hoping to find one at a second hand shop someday in 7 5/8.

On this topic I should mention my best idea I've ever had for a summer time life hack:
Take the foam floatation pad out of the pocket in your tilley hat, and replace it with a flat folding foam beer can koozie.

You're welcome.

Unless you can get a Tilley that’s made in Canada and it says clearly on an attached label saying lifetime warrantee I’d not buy one. They will not warrantee otherwise. Ever since under new ownership most of there clothing and hats are made in China now, that’s why they are so much cheaper. Not lifetime warranted like the Canadian Tilley either. Cheap materials poor quality. Shrink when washed lots of complaints nowadays etc. just not the same anymore.
Chinese made ones no better than Marks or Can Tire hats. But they are cheaper unless you find a Canadian made one.

A much less time ravaged TC once was just attractive enough to trick Mrs. TC into getting hitched.

I've got a Tilley Airflo which is nice for hot weather. I kind of wish that I had gotten a light color instead of the olive green. The green is great for keeping clean but a bit too toasty in tropical climates. I had a Tilley rain hat once, but the waterproof lining didn't breathe at all.

My all time favorite hat was an Akubra that's still in the bottom of a lake in the Yukon after tipping my canoe over about 25 years ago.

Ah man that's a bummer. I checked those out and they are not giving them away for free! Nice hats tho.

Check out Filson hats. I don’t own but and seriously considering it. I own one of their jackets and its great. You get a very lived in rugged look with it. First coat I had to break in.

Love my Tilley it keeps the sun off my floppy ears when I'm shooting and the vented top let's air circulate, drop it in the wash machine pull it out and put it on for an hour while it dries, I'm German and Russian ancestry so got to make sure it dries around the corners

I wish I could find a hat that would look good on me.

When I try on any hat other than a ball cap, IncrediGirl just says I look Tilley.
