I stick to the 12" rule but some ice reports say up to 12" and 5 more days till then. Thinking more northern lakes. We need more ice reports.

yeah i would stay off the ice with a vehicle for a while, likely get away with a ATV but everyone should use extreme caution.

BE SAFE OUT THERE EVERYONE! HAVE A GREAT MEMORABLE SEASON FOR THE RIGHT REASONS!!

Hi there, I was able to put my shack on the lake this weekend, ice was twelve inches where we drove on at shore, but once we started to get closer to the middle ice was only about 7 inches, so yes be careful. but we did manage to get a truck on the ice with no problems, Ice is very hard so we went for it, I have spent my whole life on ice so i know quite abit about what you can and cant do.

Still a little early IMO but likely some are getting close. Safe to quad though.

Default Ice Driving

12" will support a vehicle but the ice has to be good ice ..not half white and half black , like Keho ice is today . Yesterday Had to drive out a little ways , to jump start fellow anglers or leave them there ...So do not leave your radio on all day without starting the truck. Also keep battery posts clean , 1/2 cup of acid on post is definitely low maintanance, sorry NO...

Fishing.....Lots of hits , allsmall...Nice day though , no wind ,unusual for there .

NOW....The fellow I jumped ( soto speak ) did stop and ask another group for help as they were leaving , He ( DEAD BATTERY) was reasonably sure they told him to **** off , so sportsmanship is not dead but certainly mortally wounded.

A good deed is its own just reward. W101

Just got back from Northern Sask and the ice was only about 10 inches max and it has been a whole bunch colder there than here, don't drive for a while and drill a few holes first to check ice thickness, 12 inches minimum

12 inches if traveling across ice. If you are stopping and parking...I would take closer to 18 - 24 inches... IMHO.

Ice settles under the weight and will weaken the ice right under the vehicle. Plus...if while fishing some yahoos drive up and park beside you...yikes...

You can control your own actions but not those of others.

Stay safe!

Bucked up and went out for the first trip of the year, terribly slow fishing.Went on with the quads with no problems. There was one guy drove past us with his truck haha, a crew cab diesel to boot.. parked a half mile away and fished all day.. 12 inches of ice near shore, 8 inches where we were fishing..risky imo but i talked to him at the end of the day, and he has been driving on for a couple of weeks.. 6 inches was his green light.

Alberta Gov document on ice safety

An interesting read with some good information on:
-warning signs that the load is too great for the ice
-types of ice and cracking
-effects of vehicles and speed
and self rescue technique near the end

Stay safe out there

One of the locals checked the ice a while back, 12 inches of mixed ice at the shore. 3 inches where he parked. (on the bottom of the lake) its too soon this year!
