Default Deadbeats who refuse to pay

Well, it finally happened. As usual, we quote a job, it is accepted, we do the job and payment is received at the time of completion.

I quoted a job in an upscale area in SE Edmonton and the quote was accepted by the homeowner. He was present during the work, was happy at completion as we always do a final walk about with the owner to ensure he is happy, everything is done, and we get paid.

Yeah.

Asked for payment and he says he will emt. Ok. We receive lots of payment that way.

Nice reminders sent requesting payment. The answer is no. No reason. Just no.

Two Lexus in the driveway, $800,000 house, beautiful landscape, etc etc.

Yesterday Im at a rental house, do some lawn spraying, trim up 4 trees and the guy is tatooed with a pitbull. Pays cash upfront for the work. Too easy.

I've seen this in town over the years and figured out that's why they're rich.

Get the guy with the pitbull tattoo's do be your collection agency.

Or have a trailer load of cow manure dropped on the deadbeats driveway. Accidentally delivered to the wrong address.

Yep. The only time I got ripped off by a customer, it was a very very wealthy lady who took over her deceased husbands business. I had worked for them for 15 years, as did the other trades. She wrung all the cash out of business and walked away owing trades probably a million bucks? I have no idea what her net worth is but 100x that at least.

I guess I made a lot of money from that company over the years but it still burned to get left hanging on $12K.

That’s easy the second guy is probably selling coke and illegal smokes 🤪
He’s got money, the first place has payments.

Moral of the story only work for coke dealers.

You know my situation. I work for my son for free. It's my way to help him. So it's a loss for him 100%.

Talking about rich guys that don't pay bills
That Honda/ Nisan dealer on yellowhead trial in Edmonton just behind that bike shop . Well we had a group of guys working there for the Yachimec group that own a lot of other car dealers ships around Edmonton.
After one week of work ,they would not pay either . I guess they have been doing that to a lot of contractors also that start working with just a hand shack.

Time to Lien the job as long as you are in your filing period.

Make it expensive for them, that is what they understand.

Make sure you follow through with the Statement of Claim. That is what makes it more expensive for them.

Had a guy say my proposed plan of action was "cutting off my nose to spite my face".

That analogy only works if you care what others think of your appearances.

Cut off the nose, tell everyone what a jerk the face is.

Things like this really frost my banana, especially after meeting you and your son last year.

Since you already have the customer's name, phone number and likely an email address, find a photo of them online and create a GRINDR account on their behalf. Lol.

Did you ask him why he is refusing to pay?

If he has no excuse warn him about your plans to put lien on his property

And yes it's quite common for certain people in my area to drive fancy trucks and own big fancy places who will cheat and swindle. Especially if they think you are not someone anyone important cares about. Example other people who run in same social circle with them they don't seem to rip off.
I don't know how these people keep getting new people to do business with them?
Good luck

Threaten to make the guy a moderator on the forum. You'll get paid.

Default Return their trees and stuff.

Satisfaction guaranteed or double your stuff back.

Deliver all of their crap back on the driveway in the way of the fancy cars and on the lawn.

With an apology for not meeting their expectations and allowing them to see their way clear to pay for the service provided.

Write it off as bad debt on the company taxes.

This
Dump truck full of wood chips
Back over lawn to front door and dump
Tell them all branches and trees are in the pile, and your business will recover from not being paid, but won’t tolerate a theft charge against it.

What does your contract say about non-payment? You do have a contract, right? If you don't, put a lien on his house and take it as a lesson to always use a contract.

Sadly, the days of handshake deals are gone. Unless you're family, I don't do business without a contract. Even certain family members have to sign on the line.
