I'm going to put together a Remington 700, with their varmint contoured barrel, .223 in an A5. What barrel length would you recommend for balance, velocity, and noise?
C'mon Chuck you know that all sorts of things are gonna effect the balance like the type of scope, and mounts, as well as the ergonomics of how you mount a rifle.
This is something you'll have to work out with your smith.
If in doubt start long, and get the tube shortened till it works for you.
Where it me, on a 223 build like yours, I'd probably go with a 21-22" barrel. IMO the shorter heavies handle nicer. Plus the 223 does not necessarily need a long pipe to perform....

I know I know.
I'll put this one together myself utilizing a 700 factory barreled action. Scope will be a VX III 3.5-10X40 using some sort of 20 MOA rail and compaitble rings of some flavour. Balance probably won't be as important with this rifle as it would be with an, in your hands, big game rifle. Most shots taken with this thing will be at gophers with my zipper in the dirt.
