A poll on which cartridge is best for hunting coyotes, isn't really going to help anybody, any more than a poll on which cartridge is best for hunting big game would help. But at least you chose to use the correct terminology, unlike most of the people that start these silly polls.

A poll like this is exactly what is needed because of people like you and answers like that. people like you are the first ones to trash a newer person for asking a question that you have seen before more often then you want. you would think that with over 14 thousand posts you would be a bit more helpful or were they all posts like that. since your so hung up on words, I never said anything about "hunting" as you don't need a caliber for that, only for "shooting". Now take your little dog and your heart 3 sizes too small and go back up on top of you mountain so you can look down on the rest of us Who people in the village below.

Rather than conduct yet another poll, a person could simply use the search function, and end up with well over a dozen threads on this very topic, and with pretty much the same opinions and results. In every poll or thread, everyone will express their opinion on which cartridge is best, and it will go on for a few days, then die out, until someone starts a poll or thread on the very same topic, a few weeks later.

Below is just a portion of the results obtained using a search on coyote cartridges.

Okay, seriously, I've done a mess of varmint hunting in the past and my goto gun over a bait at 200 meters has always and will always be the .222 Remington
Not that the .223 or the .204 won't do it, both are great, and my one buddy used a .17 Remington for years with great success, but the .222 I use is a lightweight C.I.L. 900 (Anschutz ) and it's perfect for that.

IMO it's not so much the cartridge but the rifle you are using.
You don't want a walking varminter that weighs 10lbs. no matter what the cartridge is, but you can certainly do it with any of them posted that are lightweight.
Conversely, a long range rig that you want to shoot at 500 + needs to be a stable gun, one that will not bounce around on you , so a heavier gun is perfect here.
I have shot most of my coyotes inside 300 meters over the years, so the Deuce works for me with little pelt damage.

.17 Remington out to 400 yrds. Very clean kills, no recoil and no exit wounds. Wind drift is no different than 22-250 contrary to popular (non-user) belief. Also does not foul out as some would have you believe. Own all calibers mentioned and still find myself with the .17 on most occasions.

There's 14,414 and a good quality one it was. It must have Taken you 10 minutes to post all those and all you really had to do was be good boy and go right on past this thread and spread your hate elsewhere. Maybe go watch TV, if there's a re- run you can email the TV station and tell them the dates the show was on last. You kill me,lol

Not spreading any hate at all, just pointing out that there are already dozens of threads on this very topic, and that one more poll, isn't going to help anybody, anymore , than the dozen of threads that already exist.

This poll will not prevent a great number of questions from being asked later, as the OP suggests, because another thread like this one will be posted shortly after this one dies out. And after the next one dies out, someone will post another one, and so on, and those same questions will keep getting asked, over and over again.

I like my 22-250 but it can make for some sewing later. I've a bait at 190m and thinking I should get a 204 or 17. Hadn't really thought about the 222

well, in elkhunter11's defence, the OP's thread title includes the words ( it will save lots of future questions) which, given the subject matter's post frequency, kind of made me laugh.

Guessing elkhunter found this less than funny.

I don't understand how people struggle with which cartridge to use for a coyote...its a small dog with paper thin hide and small bones.....a 22LR is sufficient.

It will work but it is definately not overly effective you need to shoot more coyotes they are a tough little animal for their size i have shot lots with a .22 lr and it is definately not very effective other than head shots but i will agree not a ton of difference in the cartridges polled but there is a difference and that what makes it fun otherwise we would all own one gun

Default Coyote calibre

The .204 is my favorite. I own all 4 calibres and the 204 shoots flattest, fastest and takes the least amount of powder when reloading. Not to mention no recoil so you can watch your hits through the scope. Love the .204

I am a bit surprised with the pole results. I kind of expected the .223 to run away with it. The cost of ammo, it's wide range of different available gun types and makes and it's ability to handle most grains of pills as well as barrel life. I don't own one but am still surprised. Still like my 22-250 but don't know why I should but I do lol
