Default Home made cold and flu remedies

Felt a head cold coming on the last couple days and today it finally arrived. Got to thinking....anyone have a favourite home made 'sniffling, sneezing, feel better so you can rest' medicine?

For me it's usually nothing more than plenty of fluids, vitamin C and rest.....

I take a s-load of ginseng panax, echinacea, and vitamin c multiple times a day.

A guy I worked with in the patch said he eats several whole cloves of garlic, puts extra covers on his bed, and wears a touque through the night.... I never did see him sick. His remedy was not worth it to me though.

Rod, It's not homemade but I like NeoCitran when I get a cold. It clears my sinuses, makes me sleepy and I sweat it out. I think the main thing for me is getting the sinuses cleared so I can still function during the day.

NeoCitran used to be my remedy of choice too, a cup of NC and a couple aspirin and it was good night. I have high blood pressure now (under control with medication) and can't take it anymore.

Mustard plaster: Dry mustard, flour and water
Mix mustard and flour 30% -70% if you can take heat 40 -60 more mustard increases heat. And water mix till it is a paste take an old cloth or a brown paper bag open it up flat should be about 10-20" spread paste on half and fold over like a book don't want paste on skin.Go to bed put plaster on chest cover with a towel and put on t shirt (helps keep heat in) keep on for 20 to 25 min careful can burn. Take off plaster but leave on towel and t shirt have a good nights sleep....

Onions, garlic, leaks and boiler chicken bones all have natural histamines in them like natures cold medicine.

any question just ask

sure, but I do not measure....so do it to your taste

i start with a roasted chicken from super store

In a large stock pot I add 2 or 3 chopped celery stalks including the leaves, 2-3 carrots chopped, 1 white onion chopped into quarters, 2-3 bay leaves, one small red chili pepper chopped.

saute these items in a bit of olive oil for a couple of minutes, add in the whole chicken and cover either with cold stock or cold water till it covers over the chicken..you may have to squish it downand bring it to a simmer for 1 hour.

Take 4-5 cloves of garlic and place them in tinfoil along with some olive oil and salt and pepper and seal it up. Roast in your oven at 300 degrees for 45 minutes

Remove chicken, strain out and reserve the stock and the chicken for later.

Pour the stock back into the pot, remove the garlic from the oven and squeeze out the golden roasted goodness onto a chopping board...mush it all up and add to the stock. pull chicken meat off the bones and add back into stock. chop 2 stalks of celery, 3 carrots, one white onion and 1/2 red chili pepper into small bite size pieces and add to stock....add 1/2 cup of frozen peas and grate in 1 teaspoon of fresh ginger and a small bunch of cilantro chopped roughly. salt and pepper to taste and add more water or stock if needed.

it packs a bit of a punch, but helps with a cold.

Echanacea, oil of oregano, vitamin c, and zinc tablets.

I absolutely swear by this. Haven't had a cold last more than 2 days in the last 3 years.

Homemade chicken soup is always good. My Oma also was big on hot lemon honey tea, with a generous dose of brandy in it. I like it......

Make up some very strong sal****er. Gargle it and then spit it out, but swallow a few times after. Then gargle again, but this time make it come out your nose. (no joke) do this three time a day and any sore throat and nose will on it's way out the door...

Lemon juice, honey and a teaspoon of salt. down the hatch and try your best not to swallow again after fo as long as you can...

Other than that... SCOTCH!

Hey my wife just got something that looks like a small tea pot. I don't know what it's called but she says it's for flushing sinuses.

Apparently you make up some brew with eye of newt and wing of bat, hair of frog and stuff like that. then you stick it in your nostril and pour.

She says it works and she is the expert on spells and such.

Echinacea ...4 caps every 4 hours as SOON as you feel ANY symptoms like stuffy nose throat tickle, etc.

An old friend used to say if you don't treat a cold, it will last a week.
If you treat it, it will only last 7 days.
