Cold Lake Report--Pics & Video--(HOG Included)
Went to cold lake this weekend and fishing was great. I met up with a few guys from another forum and we 4X4'd it out there, getting stuck occasionally. First day was very slow, i caught about 13 lakers, nothing over 8 pounds. Then we moved and at the end of the day, i got a 10 lb burbot, and then nailed a real hog. She slammed it hard, and fought like a 20 pounder, but ended up taping out at 37' X 27' which put this fish at 33.7 lbs according to the weight formula for lake trout. They claim to be within half a pound, so i have some faith in it, i think the pics show it pretty well. Ive held alottt of salmon this size and know for a fact it was over 30. i was thrilled forsure to get it on video, and i did not think this fish was gonna be so long and chunky, it fought hard, but not like a "tyee" lake trout ![Scared0015](images/smilies/scared0015.gif) Barely hooked by the trailer which came out as soon as i got her out of the hole.
I right away knew that i should release this fish, so i was real gentle and we did lots of examining, so made sure the head was in the water most all of the time. She was unharmed and took off which felt great. All of the best pics were taken on the other 2 cameras there, so they'll email me those. The second day i headed out and walked a total of 8 km through drifted snow punching through most of the time. It was an amazing day with no wind and sunny warm skies, so i didnt mind the sweat. I needed to get back to that spot somehow as i had no truck now. Before this i started out at a closer spot and pulled in about 6 lakers between 4-8 pounds, and then when i walked to the far spot i landed another dozen fish with one around 12 pounds. I didnt fish on monday as i simply felt no need to. All fish caught by me were released. It was alot of fun all in all. Cheers.

Very nice fish indeed. Two questions. How much frost bite do they need before release? Why so difficult to free the barbless hook from a fin? Just asking.

Critter, congrats on the awesome laker. Your fish sure gets around quick LOL. Yesterday afternoon one of your partners emailed me a bunch of pics from the weekend. Looks like it was a gooder.

Would you prefer that i kept it? As for the weight, we were conservative with our measurements, and used the: (Length) * (Girth * Girth) / 800 formula. The girth was taken where your supposed to with a tight tape, right in front of the dorsal fin, but slightly towards the head she was noticably thicker. Most would likely measure in the thickest spot. That is a matter of acouple inches right there. This is the only formula i know of and the only one that shows up on any site that i have found. With conservative measurements, disgusting girth, and this formula stating this fish is almost 34 pounds combined with simple knowledge of large fish and an accurate perception of weight, i know this fish was right around 30 lbs, and i think the formula overshot it, as she cant be that big. Trust me, i was there ![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif) I compared it to the second fish on that "back to back hogs" youtube video, and it seems to be a few pounds bigger than that one which i estimated at around 26-27. Im over 6 feet and 210 pounds, the head is bigger than mine, just look at the pics and think about the measurements.

We caught one last year through the ice that was just over 32lbs. Unfortunately she had tangled into the fishing line of another angler within our group and that line got twisted up around her head and the line got under the gill plates and thus she bled pretty hard and we had line everywhere. We tried several attempts to revie her but to no avail so we had to keep her. She tasted awful!
That 32lber was a fair amount larger than the one your holding so I’ll say your would go 25lbs tops. Nonetheless that Laker of yours is an absolute beauty and a true trophy for Cold Lake. Awesome to see her being released. Great post, thanks!

Nice fish, however I'm also curious as to why the hook was so difficult to remove from the fin if it is indeed barbless........regardless, very nice laker

Awesome fish Critter, and that's definitely over 30. I pulled a 22 out of Minnewanka and it looked a LOT smaller than that hog.
Nice work and great fishing! Thanks for posting!

Have some faith people.
Beautiful fish. It's a bloody football. 1st, 4th & 6th picture show that. It's around 30 lbs. Does it really matter if it was 29 or 33 lbs? Most important thing is it went back healthy.
Fins are extremely tough. Even with a pinched barb you can't get it perfect all of the time. There could have been a little nib left on the hook that would make it hard to get out of a fin. Had it happen on Salmon and Pike many times. Not everyone buys their hooks barbless or grinds or files off the barb to perfection nor are they required too. I'm assuming it was a "cold lake special" which I don't think you can even buy barbless.
I for one will give credit where credit is due. Nice Job!

It does look like the CL Special or similar.
Barbed hooks are allowed on the SK side in Cold Lake
