Unhappy Lost "4x4 Whitetail deer head"

Well, I had an appointment to take a deer that I got a few days ago into a local butcher today. I woke up, loaded the deer into the truck and drove over. Everything went smoothly, I gave them all my information, they lopped the head and I put it in the back of the truck and left for home.

When I got home I noticed that the tailgate on my truck was down and there was no head to be found. Turns out the latch on the tailgate froze up with the cold weather and while the tailgate closes fine, one bump and it would fall down. Add a plastic liner in the box and the head never stood a chance.

I drove back expecting to find it in some intersection but no luck. In the ten minutes it took for me to get back someone had picked it up. Losing the head is not a big deal as I would have probably just tossed it next spring after 4 months or so of my wife nagging me to get rid of it, but I hope I didn't cause anyone any undo stress or worse, damage to their vehicle.

Here's a picture taken on November 20th. Not much of a story. Two hours of still hunting a patch of timber and I spotted this guy looking back at me. As I wasn't going to get out much more this season, I decided he would do.

Nice little 4x4 Fort McMurray Whitetail.

Some one who picked it up might actually go and try to get the proper 'found dead' permit at fish and wildlife. It may be worth checking with them... Love to hear the guys story of " I picked the head up while driving down Confederate Drive, just laying in the middle of the road at that big pothole..."

That is probably exactly how the story would go.

Not sure what people are thinking picking up heads off the road. Several years ago I hit a deer outside spruce grove, swerved to miss one buck and couldn't miss the other one. A 3 pointer I think. Nothing special. Drove back into Spruce grove and reported it and was back on my way within 20 minutes I was driving past the deer I hit...no head. In under half an hour on the road, someone had come along and cut off the head.

It was more than likely just someone that picked it up to get it off the road so that it wouldn't cause an accident.

I've heard stories of town bucks being shot and just the head taken. I can hear the headlines now, "Confed buck poached and just the carcass taken - head left in middle of road!"

How much distance between the butchers and your place? Probably slid out right at the butchers when you pulled away.

Not far, maybe 3 miles. I stopped at a busy intersection waiting for a green light. I would put money on that being the spot.

Head is now hanging on the wall in some other guy's man cave.

Finders, keepers is what I'm being told.

Why would anyone keep a deer head that he didn't shoot is beyond me. He'll probably tell his friends that he shot it at 1000 yds.

I was thinking the same thing.

I wonder if he has pictures of some other guy's girlfriend in his wallet that he passes off as his own?

lol SO true. I don't know why someone would keep another persons deer head. If they were going to use the antlers to make something eg. knife handles I can see wanting the antlers but mounting the head of an animal you didn't shoot, seems pathetic to me.

Guys, read the threads before posting. This is getting pretty annoying on the AO forum... Guy lost his deer head and now has found it posting a couple weeks later. Others want to know how he ended up getting it back, as would I as the story is a strange one.

He didn't get it back it has been found however.
Positrac, contact the F&W right away!if the ow life said "finders keepers" and doesn't have enough class to give it back, he likely doesn't have a permit either!!
You have photographic evidence that it's yours!

Finders keepers might work if there were no laws against possessing wildlife parts without a permit.....call F&W and let them get it back for you.

Why such an issue if you were just gonna throw it out anyway. If your proud of your deer then be proud! And hope you get it back!
Don't go on about the last day buck....if you were that serious you'd of waited till the last minute of the day and ate the tag.

Likely because he wants to enter it for the rifle draw at our big game night.
But that is irrelevant, the guy because found his antlers and has turned that into "stolen his antlers" because I would put money on the fact that a permit was not obtained.
