using other peoples tree stands

I was just wondering if you were out in the bush on public land and came across a good treestand location,would you climb up and use it hoping the owner doesnt come by?
Just asking because a buddy and I have some stands set up and when I was done with mine ,I left everything in the tree so my buddy could use it whenever.Anyways he went to use it one day and when he got there,the stand was still there but someone had taken all of my treesteps.
I have used stands in the past but have always left them the way I found them.I feel if you find one use it but dont steal anything as it is very frustrating
