Smile 2013 Camp Wainwright Primitive Weapons Season Success!!!

Well, I was drawn for the primitive weapons season this year, and I have to admit that I was looking forward to it, but I knew that deer numbers would be down due to the bad winters in 2010/2011 and 2012/2013. As expected deer sighting were significantly lower than they had been the last time I was drawn in 2007.

On day 1 I saw a total of 7 elk (5 bulls and 2 cows), 7 mule deer (1 small buck and 6 does), and 1 bull moose. Needless to say I was discouraged but still had hope for Day 2. Sightings on Day 2 were even worse at 2 mule deer does in the morning which prompted me to change locations for the afternoon hunt. I moved to another spot around 1:00pm, got suited up and headed out. About 15 minutes later I saw the buck that I would eventually take at 25 yards.

I want to thank Gary and Dave Swift for helping me and my hunting buddy drag this deer about 800 yards back to the truck. Your help was very much appreciated!!!!

Thanks for all of the compliments. It was a really tough hunt this year but it finally paid off.

I wish everyone else success on the upcoming rifle hunts.

Good deer, I would agree with your sightings on base this year, I was there for the muzzleloader hunt as well. We did not see the numbers like I have in the past, especially out in the open when driving. But every time we got out walking we found deer and lots of moose. Although numbers were down we did see some great quality deer, one giant of a mule.

Great job, as I recall we saw many moose, elk but the deer were not what I had expected three years ago. Looks like a mount for the wall.

I think I'm going to get Marco at Sugar Creek Taxidermy to do a table euro mount on some snowy scenery. He has a few pictures on his website and I think it will look good. I also want to incorporate the Nosler Partition bullet that I recoved since it's the first animal that I have taken with the ML.
