Default Largest bears shot early...mid...or end of baiting season?

This is a question that I have pondered for a long time. I couldnt think of a better place to get answers than here. Recently, watching a DVD of a outfitters 2008 season, I watched them consistently shoot their largest bears somewhere in what I would call the "early" part of their spring season. Here is what one "expert" said about shooting their largest bears:

"Oftentimes it is earler in the baiting season when our largest boars are shot due to being the first to emerge from the dens and claiming bait sites as their own. Somewhere between the middle of baiting and 'weekend long' the baits will slow with large boar activity due to 2 reasons: Dandelions (or other natural food source) and females. Yes, large bears are shot during the rut but activity and patterning becomes much more erratic."

This sounds right. What do you think?

I would agree with that reasoning. Women make men do crazy things and that is all they have on their minds. Alot of the big bears that we have shot over the years have been in the second to third week of May but that being said, if you get lucky to have a hot sow bring a big boy in, you can tag out on a hog later in the season.

Haven't heard from you on here in a while. When do you head out on your hunt? Good luck to you and hope your experience is better than last years.

Marco

Marco...Thanks for the great response...I have been busy and not been able to say too much. I love this site...the single greatest place I know of to get answers on some of these things. I am scheduled to go to saskatchewan in 5 days...looking for a great time. I'll report in when I get back.

Good luck to you. We head out on Wednesday morning for 7-9 days. This year, I went up and prebaited all our sites up north so I am excited like never before to see what is happening up there. We won't be wasting the first 2 days setting up baits and then sitting back and waiting for them to get hit. We should be able to set stands up Thursday morning and should be hunting that night. I too will post pics following our hunt.

As I mentioned, I really hope this hunt turns out great for you and you have the time of your life. Looking forward to seeing the pics when you get back........Marco
