Default Your Thoughts Sako 270WSM

Gentleman,
What are your thoughts on a Sako 85 Finnlight in 270 WSM for a new primary whitetail/mule deer gun and second as a sheep rifle for a trip I might be planning up north for Dall sheep/Mountain Caribou?

I love wood stocks, but think it might be a mistake dragging a wooden one into the mountains and accross rocks if/when I go north. Love the look, the smooth action, and detachable mag. I've always wanter at least on Sako and this will be my first.

Is this rifle light enough (naked) to be considered a sheep rifle...even if I only use it for this purpose a hand full of times in my life considering 7-10 day trips can get long?

I think caliber wise the 270 is enough for sheep and Caribou. I am comfortable shooting out to 300 yards and I don't doubt this rifle can do it.

Thanks

I have no experience with the Sako's, but WSM's the seem to be growing in popularity for sheep rifles. I find my 325 WSM savage 16 has about the same or more recoil as my brothers a-bolt 300 win shooting hot loads though, it's almost to the point where a brake would be nice though I'd rather not have one for the extra noise created.

Default Sako

I have a Sako 85 Finnlight in 7mm Rem Mag. The gun is great. It's light, recoil is fine, and it's a tac driver with anything you feed it. As for the 270 wsm, it should work great to. You have a variety of loads available and if the rifle is like any Sako I've owned, it will treat you good.

Default Sako A7

Since I'm just a poor pensioner purchasing 1900 dollar rifles is probably not a good idea financially! However, I do have the pensioner's version of a Sako. It is the cross between a Tikka T3 and the full-priced 85. It's a really nice rifle! It is also very accurate if I do my part! The Sako A7, nice to handle and a joy to pack! Great hunting rifle!

I would go with a non-mag 270 in the Finnlight if I were you. It will do every thing you want and will be much more fun to shoot.

I don't think you will notice and big difference in recoil ^^^^^

270win / 270 wsm
At that weight

It is not so much the recoil as the jump. There is a difference between the two especially at that weight.

Love the caliber with 140gr Accubonds-factory and reloads. I have two in the Tikka T3 LS and this past December added a Sako m75ss into my Sako m75 collection.

Taken elk, moose, bears, deer at various distances-majority 1-shot kill (double lung-pass thru penetration).

Longest two shots I can recall was my wife's. She spent a lot of time at the range with me shooting. A 400m on her first mulie and her first bull moose the next season at 325m. She placed the proper crosshair for the distnce in the Boone & Crocket reticle in the Leupold scope and squeezed the trigger.

I have taken elk 200-300m no problem with this caliber. Took my last large cow elk a couple years ago...it was -33 and about 200m. Make the proper shot placement. I prefer double lung myself.

Buy the Finnlight and be happy for ever! I bought my first new rifle back in 1997 - Sako m75ss 300WM and never looked back from that day. Now I have "few" Sako m75 rifles

Enjoy your new rifle and your planned hunt.
