Default best all around caiber

So sitting here bored waiting to be flown out figured I'd ask what do you guys figure is the best all aound caliber from whitetail deer to moose, short range to 300 yards. my girldfriend asked if a magnum is really needed and it. Made me think about it, I've always hunted with a magnum I personally say 7mm rem mag is great sometimes a little overkill. Ordered her a mark v in 270 wby and now she's thinking of 7mm08 or 270 win what do you guys think

.308, short to long, big or small, cheap, easy to get, doesn't kick like a mule.

And a question, to which there is no absolute answer.

Lots will work but I see absolutely no need to get a magnum for deer to moose under 300 yards unless you want your girlfriend to take an unnecesssary pounding.

yeah, I said it. LOL

uh, UNLESS you would actually prefer hunting alone. Then get her a magnum.

3006 or 303 very good to 300, the pounding is gentle.

Depends what you're after. Its always better to have too much gun than too little, but for deer moose elk etc there's nothing wrong with a 280, 270, 308, 7mm-08 etc

Don't back yourself into a corner with this "best all around thing". Everyone has their own version with accepted compromises, and it will still be the most argued about topic in hunt camp; long after we're gone...

For the most part, I think that magnums (by this I mean the big case high velocity rifle cartridges) are over represented by actual "need". 90% of the time or better, the hunter/huntress is better served by a moderate cartridge that is less demanding to shoot.

Thumbs up 300 Win Mag

Suggest the 300 Win Mag

You can load it lower levels to higher levels of performance and has ton of different bullets to shoot

Default all-around

The best all-around is, and always has been the 375 HH. Good for anywhere in the world for anything that walks, swims, or flies.
If you're ok with just North America, I would say the '06 or 338wm.

.270win and/or 30-06. To keep this thread going any longer is a waste of bandwidth.

If you want a non "magnum" and you reload your own I would say .280 Rem.
Great bullet selection and doesn't kick too bad. You could load up to 175s in it if you ever thought you needed to. Jim Carmichael has a couple of articles on the .280 if you can ever find them. I tend to agree with his thinking when it comes to the .280 Rem. One of the best cartridges ever designed. I'll probably get flamed for that comment...... And you wouldn't have to decide between a .270 or a 30-06.
