Official pre fish kicks off today for the most prestigous Walleye team tournament in western Canada, the Vanity Cup held Oct 1&2. 160 teams will compete for over $147 000 in cash and prizes and more importantly (according to some teams) bragging rights. With a wait list of over 40 teams there is no dought it is the most popular tournament in the province. The two day total weight catch and release tournament is held on the river portion of Tobin Lake, Saskatchewan just 2 km outside the beautiful town of Nipawin. Tobin Lake has a reputation as one of the best Walleye and Northern Pike fisheries in North America and the tournament showcases this every fall. In 2010 there were over 200 Walleye weighed in over 70cm (9 lbs or more) with the biggest caught by Merv Edel and the late Tom Worbeck at 15.3 lbs.

2010 champions Marvin Koizumi and Cody Earl of Calgary, AB weighed in 52.85 lbs for $50 000 and will be back to defend there title. Tobin Lake slot regulations and Tournament rules dictate that no walleye between 55 and 70 cms may be weighed and only 2 of 5 fish per day may be over 70cms.

Seasoned tournament veteren Dave Kennedy of Wetaskiwin, AB has been on the river for a week now and says fishing has been great with lots of fish being caught. Dave has been fishing the river for 19 years and when asked why he keeps coming back he says its the best fishery hes ever been to and the scenery on the river is unbeatable.

Stay tuned for tourney updates all week.

Default Pre Fish Teasers

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Great weather blesseed anglers today as aproximatly 70 teams launched there boats in the Nipawin Regional Park for another day of pre fishing. Berkley pro Tony Hadi of Regina,SK said fishing got off to a slow start this morning but managed to put 4 overs (over 70cm or 27 1/2 inches) in the boat today including a 80cm 13 lb fish and a 82cm 14 lb monster caught by local outfitter Nicole Jackson who spent the day in the boat enjoying the fantastic fall weather and great company. Tony fishes the tournament every year with his father Sam Hadi and says he predicts it will take 56 pounds over two days to take home the 50 000 cheque and bragging rights. Tony and Sam say that good slot fish (under 55cm/21 1/2 inches) will be key to winning the tournament and plan to run short passes to stay on active fish.

I was talking about PREFISH the week before the tournament. Not everyone shows for prefish. Thats a ton of pressure ! There is no place to hide and no such thing as a secret spot ! I won't get up till Friday , and i'm not too worried.
