Default Ice off Cold Lake

I'm starting a little pool when ice will be off cold Lake, and when I mean ice off Cold Lake let's say open past Garnet point I will donate a fillet knife to the winner. I'm going to make a guess of May 23rd.

Last year around the 20th of May .... (whatever date was the first opening weekend).

Half the lake was impassable by ice on Friday. You could probably ice fish in the middle of the lake.

Sunday lake was pretty much wide open with a few small berg patches.

Where are these "back bays" you speak of?

Ice is 99% off....just chunks floating around, plus 27 today so should make short work of it but still be careful, you only see the top 1/3rd of the ice the rest is below and can really wreck your outing.
Back bays are 100 % ice free so boys looks like the opener is going to be good for eyes, gators and lakers

There is still some ice sheets in french bay, main lake looks good from town but if the wind shifts then the ice sheets that are on the east side of the lake will push to the west. Be careful out there!!

Or should I say we all win because it is ice free for the long weekend.

Came off earlier then a few other lakes this year, must not have been as thick of ice out on the main lake this year since it didn't freeze until well into December.

There is a sheet of ice still floating around, pushed into French Bay Area. West winds plus 20 and windy so this will still speed up the complete thaw.
Ice chunks in and around shore.

I'm pretty excited to be out there this Friday morning for the long weekend! I have never been this early in the season, will the Lakers be shallow and hiding in the bays or out in the usual mid-late season spots?

Don't go into the back bays for lakers, they will be in the bigger bodies of water, 50 feet and up.

Back bays you can have a blast targeting the eyes and gators.

Yep we used to Target lake trout in The Bays up north quite a bit farther than Cold Lake but they're definitely in the shallows
